Privacy

The short version

There are no accounts, no logins, no contact forms and no newsletter. We do not ask for your name, your email address, your income or your employer, so there is nothing of that kind to lose, sell or leak.

The checker

The withholding checker runs entirely in your browser. The two states you select and the situation you choose are used to look up an answer in a data file your browser has already downloaded — they are not sent to a server, not stored, and not associated with you. Closing the tab ends it.

Running the checker does update the address bar so you can copy or bookmark a result. That link contains only the two state names and the situation.

Analytics

We use a self-hosted, privacy-focused analytics tool to count page views and to see which answers people look for. It sets no cookies, does not track you between websites, and does not build a profile of you. It records the page visited, the referring site, and coarse technical details such as browser and country. It honours Do Not Track.

We record when the checker is run, and with which situation and pair of states, so we know which parts of the site are worth improving. That event carries no identifier — we can see that somebody checked New Jersey to New York, never that you did.

Advertising

This site may display advertising. Ad networks set their own cookies and identifiers under their own privacy policies, which we do not control. We never pass an advertiser anything you entered into the checker, because we never have it in the first place.

Links to state revenue departments

Pages link to state agency websites so you can read the rule at source. Those sites have their own privacy practices; this policy covers only statelinetax.com.

Your rights

Because we hold no personal data about visitors, there is generally nothing to access, correct or delete. If you have emailed us, we hold that correspondence; write to[email protected] and we will delete it on request.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be described here rather than made quietly.
